All Band chairs are named after racecourses except this one. The name Camelot was intended to make the proposal more interesting to a prospective US distributor called King Arthur. The proposal was never made as the design proved wrong for the US market – hence the similar “Derby” chair! The chair was designed by Band and Graham Jones for the Miller wedding about 15 years ago and has since featured in countless celebrity magazines. Whilst popular colours include silver, wengy, fruitwood and natural, the design lends itself perfectly to a lime-wash finish, whereby lime powder is rubbed into the bare wood, removed so that only residual traces are left in the “knobbly bits”. A lacquer seal then completes this laborious process. In its lime-wash finish the Camelot chair has a distressed look which is virtually maintenance free. You should only need to wipe occasional shoe scuff-marks from the bottom of the legs.
More about the manufacture of Band bentwood chairs...
For the past 15 years, Band has named its chairs after racecourses.
The chair is made of beech from sustainably managed European forests. This hardwood lends itself to the bending process, whereby this close grained wood is steamed and bent into shape, then allowed to dry out, at which point it maintains its new shape. Whilst the time-honoured manufacturing process is highly labour intensive, many of the parts are now made by machine, high frequency equipment CNC routers etc.. Thus critical measurements can be guaranteed to allow joints to fit exactly and chairs to stack compactly 10 high.
