Derby

Derby or Chiavari

derby_large.jpgA sibling of the Camelot, this filly has a higher back and runs well in the American Stakes. The proportions of the chair lend themselves well to the stronger, oversized seat frame, which is otherwise referred to as the Chiavari chair. The turned parts give a bamboo effect, which lends itself well to a limewash finish and this in turn is virtually maintenance free.

More about the manufacture of Band's bentwood chairs...

For the past 15 years, Band has named its chairs after racecourses.

The chair is made of beech from sustainably managed European forests. This hardwood lends itself to the bending process, whereby this close-grained wood is steamed and bent into shape, then allowed to dry out, at which point it maintains its new shape. Whilst the time-honoured manufacturing process is highly labour-intensive, many of the parts are now made by machine, high frequency equipment, CNC routers etc.. Thus critical measurements can be guaranteed to allow joints to fit exactly and chairs to stack compactly 10 high.
